Seoul, Korea, October 10th - LS Cable & System built a power cable plant in the US. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the power cable plant was held on October 9 in Tarboro, North Carolina, US. More than 200 guests attended the ceremony, state government officials including Keith Crisco, North Carolina Department of Commerce , including Chairman & CEO Christopher Koo, President & CEO Jong-Ho Son, President and COO Ja-Eun Koo, Stephen Carter CEO of Superior Essex, customers, and plant employees. 

A total of $64 million dollars (approx. KRW70 billion) was invested in the construction of the building, which began in May 2011. The new manufacturing facility is approximately140,000m² (approx 42,000 pyeong), and it will be able to produce 20,000 tons of signal and control cables (300V~600V), low-voltage power cables (600V-2kV) and medium-voltage power cables (5-35kV) per year. LS Cable & System said its state-of-the-art production facility has an effective inventory management system that will make it possible to proactively and promptly respond to key customers’ demands for products. Early production lines, which were completed in December 2011 in an adjacent manufacturing facility, have already been producing 300V and 600V signal and control cables. 

Superior Essex will concentrate on producing low to medium-voltage distribution cable products in the initial stages and develop high-value-added products, such as high-voltage cables for transmission and power solution products. With the creation of this new US-based Energy division, there will be synergies that make it possible to supply LS Cable & System’s extra-high-voltage and submarine cable products to the North American market. Presently, the US has more than 3,500 generation, transmission, and distribution utility companies. As of the end of 2011, its installed capacity is projected at 1,072GW, which makes the United States the number-one producer and consumer of electric power. The U.S. electrical system is going through a transformation where existing grids are being redesigned with new technology. The plan is to cover 20% of its total power consumption with renewable energy by 2030.
