■ Prizes awarded to wireless cable solution, railway application and high-voltage cable unit for electric vehicles

Seoul, Korea, 17th, July - On the 17th, LS Cable & System (Chairman & CEO: Christopher Koo) held a ceremony to share R&D performances of the R&D Awards 2012 inside the Gumi Plant auditorium. Around 300 executives and employees including President Jongho Son and Vice President Junhyeong Jo attended the ceremony. At the event, “wireless network cable solution” and “railway application” won the top prizes, “400kV level cable system” won the excellence prizes and “high-voltage cable unit for electric vehicles,” “urban traffic information system (UTIS) solution,” “air blown MV level hybrid optical fiber cable” and “UPC copper alloy wire” won the encouragement prizes. 

The prizewinning R&D outcomes share a common ground that these are application and solution R&D projects LS Cable & System is extensively promoting for its business model innovation. According to LS Cable & System’s insider, the R&D outcomes hold a great significance that the company’s R&D performances to develop and provide solutions customers want, rather than single cable items, are being visualized. In addition, LS Cable & System enhanced development completeness by thorough market research and customer-centered R&D from the initial phase of development. As such, it is worth noting that the accomplishments are of “practical R&D” that directly leads to order receptions and sales and therefore brings both tangible and intangible management effects to the company. 

“Wireless cable solution” is used for implementation of communications network in areas where electric wave cannot reach, such as railways, basement of a building and inside a tunnel. In other words, this is a solution that enables the use of wireless Internet service in addition to voice call inside a subway train or a moving KTX as of now. LS Cable & System successfully entered the Japanese communications market by supplying the solution to this market where quality barriers are extremely high and customers’ needs are difficult to satisfy. 

The R&D of “railway application” was to develop cables and wires for rapid-transit railway cars and key products of low and medium-voltage cables for railway infrastructures. The outcome was an expansion of business areas to include not only cables and parts for railway cars, but also the railway system consisting with power supply and signaling systems. LS Cable & System forecasts that the application will continuously generate sales. 

For “400kV level cable system,” a winner of the excellence prize, LS Cable & System developed a 400kV extra high-voltage insulated wire, which is of large capacity, but of reduced weight and thickness, together with the related connector in order to secure competitiveness of its extra high-voltage cables in the global market. Compared to general extra high-voltage cables where pure copper is used as a conductor, this state-of-the-art cable system has been increased of transmission capacity by more than 20%. LS Cable & System insider explained that the development of this system had made a decisive contribution to the company’s recent winning of a KRW 130 billion project from Kuwait. 

Awarded with the encouragement prize, “urban traffic information system solution” collects and provides traffic information to drivers. LS Cable & System succeeded in commercializing this system by obtaining the Wi-Fi Alliance Certification for UTIS as the first in the world. With “high-voltage cable unit for electric vehicles,” LS Cable & System climbed to the position of a No. 1 supplier in the Chinese electric vehicles market by recently signing a supply contract with BDNT. “Air blown hybrid optical fiber cable,” a new cable combining both power supply and communication cables, is essential in smart grid and new communications network implementation. Lastly, “UPC (up casting) copper alloy wire” was a project to develop copper alloy materials for industrial use. The materials are applied to a wide range of industrial products and therefore will enable the company’s entry into new markets. 

LS Cable & System President Jongho Son said in his congratulatory speech, “We must pursue R&D activities centering on solutions and applications in order to become Global No. 1.” He added, “I ask our R&D personnel to work with a sense of mission and pride as the next 50 years of LS Cable & System will be in their hands.”
