■ LS-Vietnam Baduk Championship serves as a catalyst for promoting Baduk
■ LS Group Chairman, John Koo makes a special visit to the award ceremony

 

LS Group (Chairman & CEO: John Koo) announced on September 18 that it sponsored the 2nd Annual LS-Vietnam Baduk Championship, which was held at the Hoang Ahn Gia Lai Hotel in Da Nang, Vietnam from September 15 to September 18. Recent years have seen a rapid rise of interest in Baduk in Vietnam. John Koo, Chairman & CEO of the LS Group, who has a special affection for Baduk, and Christopher Koo, Chairman & CEO of LS Cable & System, who is Honorary Vietnamese Ambassador to Korea, attended the event to help promote cultural exchange between the two countries and spread Baduk throughout Vietnam. Hence, the contest was named the LS-Vietnam Baduk Championship.

John Koo, Chairman & CEO of the LS Group made a special visit to the awards ceremony among his busy schedule and said “Baduk is a game that best represents LSpartnership based on mutual trust, consideration and respect,” said John Koo, Chairman & CEO of the LS Group at the awards ceremony. “I hope that LS will continue to be partners with the people of Vietnam.”

This year a total of 128 players got through the preliminaries held in 9 cities such as Hanoi, Hochimin, etc. and played for four days in the tournament final matches. “Since LS hosted the national championship, interest in Baduk has increased remarkably,” said Mr. Gangwook Lee, 8th-degree Baduk pro, who is working hard to promote Baduk in Hochiminh. He also said, ”Duy, who was the champion in the men’s division at last year’s championship, is a full-time Baduk player, and some even travelled to Korea to study the game.”

LS Cable & System first arrived in Vietnam in 1996 and now employs 600 or so employees at two local subsidiaries. The company turns over about $350 million (about KRW390 billion) each year, contributing to the economic development and employment of Vietnam. Also, LS Cable & System sends Korean college student volunteers every year to Vietnam to promote exchange among the private sector. 

Christopher Koo, Chairman & CEO of LS Cable & System was appointed Honorary Vietnamese Ambassador to Korea in 2010, has been supporting important local events, such as the 65th Independence Day of Vietnam, the Vietnamese Culture and Tour Festival, the Korea-Vietnam Friendship Night, and the local cultural experience for Korean opinion leaders.
