■ Supplies extra high-voltage cables amounting US$50 million to Connecticut, USA
■ Appointed as the final supplier in the bidding inviting the top 6 electrical companies worldwide
■ Opportunity to occupy the future demand of the Electricity Authority in the Midwest, USA
LS Cable (CEO: Koo Chayol) entered into an agreement with an American electricity company on January 10 to supply 345kV (kilovolts) extra high voltage cables amounting US$50 million.
It is the first big-scale overseas order entered in this year with Connecticut Light & Power located in the northeast of USA, the biggest electricity company in Connecticut. They decided to supply the whole electricity project in turnkey bases as well as extra high-voltage cables and connecting materials, and plan to complete construction by the end of 2008.
This Connecticut project was worth a total of US$150 million, LS Cable was awarded an order amounting US$50 million and General Cable, USA received an order amounting US$70 million in the bidding war that saw only the top 6 global companies, Prysmian (Italy), General Cable (USA), Sudkabel (Germany)and J-Power and Viscas (Japan) make an offer.
LS Cable succeeded in the bidding because its capability was already proven by the extra high voltage electricity cable order and project completion amounting US$60 million in New York last year. It is also expected to preoccupy the demand for extra high-voltage electricity cables by the Electricity Authorities in the US market, especially in the Midwest region.
With projects pitting them against other global companies in Europe and Japan, they are now positioned as a major company in the field of extra high-voltage electricity cables. They also made an opportunity to diversity the market structure of electricity cables which was concentrated in the Middle East and Asian region.
Connecticut Light & Power supplies high-voltage transmission lines to New England (6 other states in the northeast region of the USA) and is upgrading about 55% of its transmission cables in the area. In the next 5 years, they plan to invest a total of US$230 million to upgrade their transmission cables.
◈ Status of high voltage electricity cables and export
: 220kV cables are mainly used in the extra high-voltage electricity cable market worldwide. 154kV cables are strongest in Korea while extra high-voltage electricity cable of 345~400kV are under development in advanced countries including the USA.
: ◈ What is extra high-voltage electricity cables?
: Electricity cables used in underground power transmission lines have higher transmission capacity unlike electricity cables that use oil insulator resulting in loss of electricity. Without the use of oil make it an excellent alternative because it helps in preventing environment contamination and fires.
