■ LS Cable to build the integrated subway fare system for the Ministry of Transportation and Communication of the Philippines.
■ LS Cable won the order for the submarine power grid of the Haenam-Sinan pilot complex in Jeolla-namdo as well as the Jeju Woljeong-ri pilot complex.
Seoul, Korea, February 22, 2010 - LS Cable (Chairman & CEO Christopher Koo) has successively won orders for its new next-generation business, i.e. the submarine cable and solution supply business. This business is quite active.
LS Cable announced on February 22 that the company won the contract for the integrated subway fare system project from the Department of Transport and Communication of the Philippines on a BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer) basis. BOT refers to a type of arrangement in which the supplier takes charge of initial operation for a specified period of time in order to recover some profit then hands over the project to the buyer. This project will generate KRW25 billion of sales in the first year, and KRW140 billion in ensuing years.
The project is to build the transportation card-based fare payment system for the entire subway system of Manila, the capital of the Philippines, which is used an estimated 300 million times a year. Three subway lines are currently in operation in Manila, but each line has its own fare system, inconveniencing many users. LS Cable is currently upgrading the system to integrate the different fare systems into a single, homogenous one to minimize the ticketing wait time, which currently requires 4~10 minutes.
On the back of this success, LS Cable is planning to break into not only the market for fare calculation systems of all transportation systems within the Philippines including buses, taxis, trains and passenger ships, but also the smartcard-based micro payment market.
LS Cable has also won the contract for the efficient supply of electric power to islands in Korea as well as the contract for the submarine cable installation project for the pilot wind power generation complex. LS Cable will carry out the project by installing 9km of cables, worth KRW25 billion. This project includes the submarine power grid connecting Haenam-gun and Sinan-gun in Jeolla-namdo, and the submarine power grid to be used for the pilot wind power generation complex in Woljeong-ri, Jeju-do. The project is meaningful in that the company is using only local technology to build the system for supplying electric power to the islands and the power grid for the renewable energy business.
The global submarine power grid business is expected to be worth KRW1.8 trillion in 2009. It is rapidly increasing due to development of the islands, international policies for reducing power generation costs, construction of marine wind power generation complexes, construction of nuclear power plants on islands, and the Northeast Asian power grid connection project. LS Cable will capitalize on these accomplishments to make inroads into the global submarine cable market including Europe and Southeast Asia.
