■ Operates plants in earnest to produce ultrahigh voltage transformers, thick
pipes
■ Constructs full line-up of power solutions by entering ultrahigh voltage
transformer business
■ LS Metal makes foray into thick pipe market, emerging as one of world’s top
three makers
LS Industrial Systems has completed a plant for the production of ultrahigh
voltage transformers and thick pipes, laying a solid foundation for advance
into new businesses aimed at boosting core competence as a global
enterprise.
Going beyond the efforts to maximize synergistic effects with its conventional
businesses through small M&As, LSIS has thus significantly expanded the
scope of its conventional businesses.
LSIS held a ceremony at the Hwajeon Industrial Complex in Busan on April 2 to
inaugurate its Busan Plant, which includes production lines for ultrahigh
voltage transformers and thick stainless steel pipes. The company made the
achievement one year and five months after holding a groundbreaking
ceremony in November 2008.
LSIS constructed the Busan Plant at 108,000 sq.-meter property in the
Hwajeon Industrial Complex within the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone by
investing a total of 210 billion won.
The plant is capable of churning out ultrahigh voltage transformers totaling
15,000 MVA, and thick pipes amounting to 45,000 tons per year. These figures
translate into 600 billion won in annual production.
The Busan Plant, the largest factory facility in the Hwajeon Industrial Complex,
encompasses a ultrahigh voltage transformer factory building standing 30
meters tall, and a thick pipe factory extending 250 meters long. LSIS has used
7,700 tons of steel frames to build the plants, a volume that extends 140 km if
stretched out.
With the completion of the Busan Plant, LSIS is entering the ultrahigh voltage
transformer business in earnest, and has completed a full line-up of products
encompassing power facilities ranging from those for low, high to ultra high
voltages. LS Metal has constructed Asia’s first plant exclusively for the
production of stainless steel thick pipes, emerging as one of the world’s top
three large-diameter thick pipe makers.
Notably, for the ultrahigh voltage transformer business, LSIS will construct a
plant to produce High Voltage Direct Current Transmission Systems,
considered the “center piece of power transmitting technology,” at an 11,156
sq.-meter property at a site near the Busan Plant. As such, these plants are
expected to generate massive synergist effects.
The ultrahigh voltage transformer plant and the large-diameter thick pipe
plant will be operated independently by LSIS and LS Metal, respectively.
LS Metal, which was established on April 1 through split of LSIS’ metal
business, is thus incorporating the large-diameter thick pipe plant under
its operation. LSIS aims to produce and sell products worth 130 billion
won this year, and attain 600 billion won in annual sales in 2015 at the
Busan Plant.
LS Cable is planning to concentrate on improving profitability and reinforcing its growth potential by carrying out these core tasks and laying the foundation for establishing itself as the global No.1 cable maker by 2015.
