■ LS Cable trying to market it for use in nuclear power plant transmission lines of newly industrializing countries including Korea, China and India.
Seoul, Korea, March 3, 2010 - LS Cable (Chairman & CEO Christopher Koo) announced on March 3 that it has become the first in Korea to successfully develop an environment-friendly large-capacity gas-insulated transmission line. Unlike ordinary power cables, gas insulated transmission lines use gas, not a solid or liquid, as an insulator. The transmission capacity of gas-insulated lines is more than double that of existing underground cables and there is little power loss so that power can be easily transmitted over a long distance.
Also, unlike existing cables, it is made of metal and stable enough to not catch fire in case of an accident that may cause a short circuit. For these reasons gas-insulated lines are used in major overseas nuclear power plants and substations. Despite their benefits, gas-insulated transmission lines have a rather serious drawback in that they use as the insulator Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6, see glossary), which is a ‘greenhouse gas.’
However, the environment-friendly large-capacity gas-insulated transmission line developed by LS Cable uses a mixed gas, 80% of which is nitrogen gas that is harmless to the environment, while also reducing more than 99% of the electromagnetic waves emitted from the line. This new technology is rated as an ideal product fit for environment-friendly ‘green’ economic growth.
Through a government R&D project of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, top experts in electric power from LS Cable, KEPCO KEPRI, Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) and Hanyang University collaborated to develop this technology independently.
LS Cable has already completed the official KERI certification test and has since installed about 100m of the 345kV/2.4GVA environment-friendly gas-insulated transmission line, terminals and a monitoring system in the Gochang Test Center as part of a long-term verification test. LS Cable is currently in the process of commercializing the environment-friendly gas insulated transmission line and monitoring system as installed in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do. In addition, the company is planning to push ahead with the application of 500kV transmission lines for major power plants and substations in newly industrializing countries like China and India where a large number of nuclear power plants are under construction.
※ Glossary: Sulfur Hexafluoride gas
Sulfur Hexafluoride (Chemical formula: SF6, Common name: Sulfur Hexafluoride) is a compound of fluorine and sulfur. The fluorine atoms are positioned in an octahedron structure around the sulfur atom. The gas has been widely used as an insulator since the 1960’s and is not a direct health hazard to humans, but the gas contributes to global warming. Along with CO2, HFCs and PFCs it is a representative greenhouse gas regulated by the Kyoto Protocol.
