■ Invested US$25 million to establish a high-tech production line – 1 million m² production capacity every year

LS Cable (CEO, Chayol Koo) recently established a production line for FCCL (Flexible Copper Clad Laminate) with 1 million m² annual capacity in Jeongeop, Chunbok and started a full-scale production. This is the biggest production capacity in Korea. 

They have invested a total of US$25 million since May 2005 to prepare the production line of their state-of-the-art facility. For the FCCL produced in this factory, sputtering method is applied which sprays and evaporates Cu to Polyimide Film. It is mainly used in LCD and LCD Driver IC (LDI).

Sputtering method FCCL is a flexible circuit that is used in mobile phones, PC, LCD monitors, etc. The capacity of global market is about US$150 million, but the demand is expected to increase in the future according with the rapid growth of the LCD market. Most of them are currently imported from Japan.

LS Cable specially established a sputtering method production line for FCCL and could overcome the limitation of the existing casting method. Using the existing method, thin circuit boards with less than 45㎛ could not be produced. It is expected to have effects on import substitution as well as preoccupy the market demand with the increasing LCD market in the future. 

Meanwhile, LS Cable receives a certification test for first product from major LCD panel manufacturers like LG Philip LCD, Samsung Electronics, etc. From the year end when certification process is completed, they plan to produce and supply products. They also estimate that the sputtering method FCCL market will rapidly grow by 20% every year according to the board to board trend of mobile phone panels, and plan to increase the production line to 3 million m²annually.

LS Cable plans to increase sales turnover of more than US$30 million next year, which is the first business year; and US$70 million by 2010. Based on technology interrelation with on-going Copper Foil business for PCB, they will reinforce material business for electronic and information communication through FCCL business. 

(Characteristic and usage of FCCL production method)

- Sputtering method: is a method that sprays and evaporates Cu to Polyimide (PI) Film. Board to board of less than 45㎛ is possible and used in LCDs, mobile phones and PCs. 

- Casting method: is a method of coating PI resin to Copper Clad Laminate (CCL). More than Pitch 45㎛. Used in mobile phones and digital products.
