■ Commencement of a 250kV circuit for the 315km Jindo to Jeju connection set for June, project to be completed in 2011

On June 1, LS Cable (Chairman & CEO Christopher Koo) launched the 250kV submarine cable project for which mass production succeeded for the first time in Korea at the Donghae Plant located in the Songjeong Industrial Complex in Donghae-si, Gangwon-do. This cable will be supplied for the Jindo – Jeju project, which is the largest scale in Korea (KRW 330 billion). With a total extension of 315km, the net weight of the 18.2cm diameter of this mammoth submarine cable is 6,000 tons. 

LS Cable’s submarine cable consisting of one communication cable and two HVDC (high voltage direct current) cables measures 105km each. The key to success of this project lies in successful installation of a single circuit comprising three submarine cables between Jindo and Jeju to and from. 

This submarine cable will be shipped to Jindo, Jeollanam-do by the Responder, the cable installation ship of Maersk, the world’s No. 1 container forwarder. Then, through cooperation with KT Submarine, installation will commence in June at the 105km section between Jindo and Jeju. This will be followed by installation of an additional circuit and the project will be completed by 2011. 

Submarine cable is a high-tech cable that not only enables power and communication transmission, but also transports gas and water between countries or between onshore and island regions. LS Cable was the 4th in the world to succeed in producing a 250kV submarine cable. 

In particular, the key of submarine cable technology is to produce the required length without any sectioning in the middle. An insider of LS Cable said that the company’s success in producing the 105km submarine cable was a demonstration of LS Cable’s world-class technology. In addition, the cables can be installed without requiring a field connection at the 105km section under the sea. 

The launching ceremony was attended by approximately 100 employees and officers of LS Cable including Chairman Koo and President Son Jong-ho. President Son gave a congratulatory speech. “The first shipping of submarine cable demonstrates that LS Cable’s technology is of the world’s highest standard.” He added, “Starting from this, we will make the best effort to enter the global submarine cable market.” 

LS Cable has successfully won several important projects, such as the submarine power network implementation between Haenam and Sinan for successful power supply to island regions earlier this year, and the submarine cable project for a pilot wind power generation complex in Woljeong-ri, Jeju-do.
