■ Successfully developed extra high voltage underground cable, the fourth in the world.
■ Factory construction is approved within 3 months, and Gangwon Province proves business friendly policy
On April 30, LS Cable (CEO: Christopher Koo) held the groundbreaking ceremony for the submarine cable factory in Donghae City, Gangwon Province, where about 1,200 persons participated including government and local officials; Lim Chae-Min the Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Kim Jin-Sun the Governor of Gangwon Province, Choi Yeon-Hee the member of the National Assembly, Kim Hak-Ki the Mayor of Donghae City; company officials including Koo Ja-Yeol the Vice-Chairman of LS Cable and related personnel in KEPCO.
LS Cable plans to invest 130 billion Won to develop about 248,000 m² (equivalent to 75,000 pyongs) in Songjeong Industrial Complex, near the Donghae Port and construct the Donghae Factory to produce submarine cables from May 2009. Enabling telecommunications, gas and water as well as power cable to be transported between countries, continentals and islands, the state-of-the-art technologies in these fields are already at hand.
Since December 2004, LS Cable has implemented “developing cable accessory and securing jointing skill for recovering HVDC submarine cable”, a project assigned to Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) researchers. To do this, about 20 researchers were sent to develop 180kV and 250kV submarine cables. Development was completed at th end of last year and recently, successfully finished an official certificate test by Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI).
The 250kV class extra high voltage submarine cable, developed by LS Cable, for the fourth time in the world, is ready to meet the needs of global market. Up until now, only several companies, such as Nexans, Prysmian and ABB have occupied the market with the total amount of submarine cables used in the domestic market.
It is expected to replace the imported cables amounting to more than 100 billion Won yearly with submarine cables produced in the Donghae Factory operating next year. Christopher Koo, the Vice Chairman of LS Cable said, “As one of the national key industries closely related to the national interests, LS Cable’s Donghae Factory will contribute to the Korean economy and local society beyond the pursuit of business profits.”
The global submarine cable market is expected to reach about US$1.2 billion this year. The market size has rapidly grown by more than 30% every year due to policies such as reducing generation cost of electricity between countries in Europe, expansion of marine wind power generation, construction of nuclear power plants in islands, long-term project of submarine cables and project connecting electric power in Northeast Asia.
In Korea, 180kV-class extra high voltage submarine cables are installed only in Cheju and Haenam, Jeollanam-do. In 20 places between Jangsan Island and Jado Island, Chunnam, 22.9kV submarine cables are under operation to supply power. Since submarine cables are exposed to various dangers such as fishing damage, prompt and economic maintenance in case of emergency is vital. Through various activities, such as participating to recover cables connecting Cheju and Hannam, LS Cable has continuously accumulated the technology for submarine cables.
