■ LS Cable expands to introduce overseas advanced technology, joint researches, and investment 
■ Expand to invest to 30% of R&D expenses by 2010. Core technology level will be increased more than 30% every year 

LS Cable (CEO: Christopher Koo) announced on April 1 that they decided to aggressively develop ‘Open Innovation’ (technology innovation) using outsourcing manpower in developing core technology. To do this, LS Cable will establish comprehensive cooperation relationship with well-known research centers, universities, and customers. Through global technology brokerage agency, they will also introduce overseas advanced technology while actively investing in venture companies. 

With the wire and wireless telecommunication network, wire harness of automotives, electronic components and eco-friendly materials as major industries, there are about 40 core technologies to be outsourced by LS Cable in the future. 

LS Cable Chief Technical Officer, Cho Joon-Hyung announced that “The company will increase investment in technology outsourcing by 2010 by more than 30% of total R&D expenses, and increase core technology level more than 30% every year.” He also added that “Using global technology connecting companies is an advanced technology outsourcing method adapted by only several enterprises in Korea.” 

As more integration and compound of technology are getting popular together with fierce competition of new products, the movement of open technology innovation enabling remarkable accomplishments with minimum expense and investment within a short time is getting active. It’s different from the existing closed technology innovation focusing on internal R&D. Taking an example of P&G, they used outsourcing research manpower of 1.5 million persons – 200 times than that of the company – for idea to develop products and core technology to increase R&D productivity by more than 60%. 

LS Cable transferred about 20 sleeping patents to small and medium companies last year. They also decided to operate “T-Forum” to share their experience of technology development and activate the idea proposal of researchers. Aside from that, they are trying for open technology innovation in various methods.
