■ 200 key personnel including the Environment Minister attended the completion ceremony on Oct. 12th
■ Infrastructure implemented in a research complex, service stations and large discount shopping malls
■ Advantageous position secured in the market with installation and operation expertise
LS Cable (Chairman & CEO Christopher Koo) has completed Korea’s first high-speed electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The Ministry of Environment organized a completion ceremony to celebrate the implementation of LS Cables pioneering charging stations at the General Environmental Research Complex located in Incheon. The ceremony was attended by approximately 200 key personnel including Environment Minister Lee Man-Eui.
Charging stations were installed at public locations for high-speed electric vehicles (60kph+) that can be driven on highways. LS Cable installed a total of 13 electric vehicle charging stations (6 quick chargers, one semi-quick charger and 6 slow chargers) not only at the General Environmental Research Complex, but also at select GS Caltex service stations (Samseongno Branch, 88 Service Station), Lotte Mart (Jamsil World Branch, Guro Branch) and Gwacheon City Hall.
One each of the solar powered quick, semi-quick and slow chargers were installed at the General Environmental Research Complex where they will be used to provide vital research data for next-generation charging infrastructure. Therefore, with the implementation of charging stations, LS Cable and LS Ind. Systems became the first in the electric vehicle market to secure advantageous positions.
For this project, LS Cable, the prime contractor, was responsible for the supply and installation of the quick and semi-quick chargers, and LS Ind. Systems, the joint supply contractor, was responsible for the slow charger stands, solar power generation system and operation management system (OS). With quick charging of 30 minutes, semi-quick charging of one hour and slow charging of 6~8 hours, a vehicle can drive for 135~140km (based on the Hyundai BlueOn EV). Users can select the charger type they need according to charging time and rates. LS Cable has not only supplied chargers for this project, but will also be responsible for installation and operation of the entire charging infrastructure. Through this project, LS Cable will gain the operation know-how for electric vehicle charging systems.
According to the Electric Vehicle Industry Activation Plans announced in 2009, 10% of compact cars in Korea (approx. 150,000) will be replaced with electric vehicles by 2020. In addition, electric vehicle use is being actively promoted throughout the world, especially in the U.S., U.K., France and Japan where large tax incentives are being offered. Israel also joined in the movement by recently announcing a plan to install 1,000 charging stations by next year.
