■ LS Mtron has invested KRW50 billion to build a state-of-the-art plant capable of producing 60,000 tractor engines per year.

LS Mtron (President & CEO Jae-seol Shim), an affiliate of the LS Group specializing in industrial machinery and state-of-the-art components, announced on June 26 that the company has completed construction of a state-of-the-art engine plant to meet the sharply increasing global demand for tractor engines, thus securing a competitive edge in the global tractor market while responding to increasingly tighter exhaust gas regulations. Over 200 people, including Jae-seol Shim, CEO of LS Mtron, Gwang-won Lee, VP in charge of the machinery division, and Seong-il Park, Wanju-gun Governor-Elect, attended the event.  

This engine plant for which LS Mtron invested KRW50 billion over a four-year period can produce 60,000 engines per year ranging between 30hp and 73hp. The site covers 23,223m2 with the plant having a floor space of 8,475m2. To create synergies, the plant is located in Techno Valley in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do where the tractor division is located.

To maximize the efficiency of the engine plant, LS Mtron built a flexible production system suitable for small batch production. The plant also has equipment necessary for standardizing engine production while securing top flight quality, and as RFID is applied to all processes, the manufacturing systems can automatically check production status in real time. In particular, to maintain the integrity of the fuel delivery system to prevent fuel contamination, a core feature of the tier 4 engine, LS Mtron installed a clean room and has built an ideal infrastructure for producing the best engines. 

The tier 4 engine, the main product of the new plant, is the outcome of the know-how that LS Mtron has accumulated from its 37 years of being in the tractor business. As it has an electronic control system, it claims high-power and hi-efficiency yet low emissions. It is an environment-friendly engine that has quick responsiveness and complies with tier 4 exhaust gas regulations. It seems that the engine plant, based on cutting-edge technology and a state-of-the-art production system, will play a pivotal role in increasing tractor production capacity to 200,000 units by 2020. Also, the concurrent growth of related businesses may be expected with the tractor business playing the central role as the opportunity to sell engines will greatly expand.

LS Mtron is now not only able to meet the sharply increasing demands for tractors and engines but with the new plant the company gain a competitive edge in global markets in terms of quality, delivery and price. As a result, growth of the tractor business will surely accelerate even further. 

On June 18, 2013, LS Mtron elevated the agreement it signed with ASI involving the Uzbekistan government to supply $500 million worth of tractors, and secured an exclusive right to supply tractors smaller than 100hp. In January 2014, the company entered into an agreement with CNHi to supply $500 million worth of tractors, so LS Mtron is making splendid achievements in the global market. The tractor business was worth KRW100 billion when it was first launched in 2008, but since then sales reached KRW552 billion by the end of last year. For 2014 the tractor business is aiming to generate KRW704.5 billion in sales, so the tractor business is growing at an impressive clip. In particular, overseas sales of tractors and related equipment were KRW42.9 billion in 2008, but that increased by 8.6 times to KRW370.5 billion in 2013.  

Meanwhile, in the US and Europe, as well as in Korea, the tier 4 exhaust gas regulations will be enforced in earnest in 2015, so companies absolutely need to secure environment-friendly engines. To respond to this regulation and lead the market, LS Mtron began to develop its tier 4 engine in 2011 and has now completed construction of the tractor engine plant as a result.
