■ Will develop cable that is 15% lighter with twice the transmission capacity of existing cables 
■ Signed exclusive sales contract for China, India, Vietnam and Korea 


Seoul, Korea, 20th, February- On the OOth, LS Cable & System (Chairman and CEO: Christopher Koo) announced the signing of an HVCRC (high voltage composite reinforced conductor) business agreement with Mercury Cable & Energy of the U.S. (CEO: Ronald Morris). According to the agreement, LS Cable & System will develop HVCRC by yearend with materials supplied by Mercury Cable & Energy. The agreement is for two years with an option for extension upon expiration. 

Overhead transmission cables are used for power transmission between power plants or substations. Conventional cables have an aluminum-clad steel wire core inserted in the middle to support them. For the HVCRC to be introduced by LS Cable & System through cooperation with Mercury Cable & Energy, the steel wire will be replaced with a carbon composite core to save weight by 15%. The new cable will also offer twice the transmission capacity. 


Therefore, with the HVCRC a more highly-efficient power network is possible with lower installation and maintenance costs. In particular, LS Cable & System will have the exclusive rights to sell the HVCRC using the Mercury Cable & Energy materials to emerging market countries such as China, India and Vietnam in which large-scale power network or transmission line replacement projects are being implemented. LS Cable & System anticipates that it will be possible to promote projects more aggressively in these markets. 

 “With this agreement, LS Cable & System’s business portfolio will be strengthened and this will give us a new momentum for overseas market entry,” said Executive Director Jaein Yun of LS Cable & System’s Energy Division. “We will introduce a variety of products targeting countries in which we are preparing for new power network implementation and transmission capacity extension projects.”
