Seoul, Korea, May, 19th - LS Cable and System (Chairman & CEO Christopher Koo) announced on the 19th that it developed 1kV 400Hz aircraft power supply cables after two years of research for the first time in Korea and delivered them to Incheon International Airport Corporation.

This cable is used to supply power directly to airplanes at airports. As its frequency band is over five times higher than that of general 60Hz cables, the cable can be used in 400Hz power systems for commercial and military aircraft and even utilized onboard aircraft carriers (see Terminology at the end). The higher the frequency band, the higher the cable surface resistance becomes. To solve this problem, top-level technologies are needed from material selection to structure design and evaluation. LS Cable and System is the fifth company in the world to have developed this product, demonstrating its world-class R&D abilities. With this achievement LS Cable and System now has a foothold in the high tech segment of the cable industry. 

Until now airplanes have been generating their own power by running their engines in idle mode. But this practice needlessly discharges enormous amounts of carbon dioxide. To address these problems, domestic and international new airports as well as major airports such as Incheon International Airport are now scrambling to introduce ancillary 400Hz ground power systems (GPS) and thus the related cable market is growing quickly to fulfill the demand.

According to LS Cable and System, the global airport cable market is around KRW 700 billion a year and the 400Hz aircraft power supply cable market is estimated to be KRW 50 to 60 billion. As barrier to entry is high and advanced technology required, it is not easy to develop such cables except for global leading companies. 

LS Cable and System is now going to accelerate their marketing activities to supply GPS cables to overseas airports, especially in China, as it has successfully supplied cables to the Incheon International Airport Corporation which can be used as a reference.

LS Cable and System continues to innovate its business model around solutions and develop special purpose cables used in railroads, wind power generators, ships, automobiles, and photovoltaic energy generation. The development of aircraft power supply cables is part of these endeavors.

※ 400Hz Power System
This system uses 400 Hz current which is higher than the conventional 60 Hz system. The use of this system can decrease the weight of generators for mobile devices and other systems. However, as current is concentrated on the cable surface, current interruption due to heat buildup and electromagnetic loss can occur. For these reasons the design of the cable structure is critical.
