■ The world’s highest-grade environment-friendly radioactive-proof cables for nuclear power plants

Seoul, Korea, October 20th - LS Cable announced that its 200M Rad environment-friendly cables for nuclear power plants has received EQ (Environment Qualification) certification from CNPEC in China, and that the company will now enter the Chinese nuclear power plant cable market estimated to be worth about KRW3 trillion by 2025. 

This is the highest-grade halogen-free radioactive-proof cable developed so far in the world. LS Cable succeeded in its development at the end of last year for the second time in the world. 200M Rad cables can be exposed to 5 times more radioactivity than the average amount accumulated in nuclear power plants for 40 years, the average life span of such a plant, which is 30~40M Rad.  

Cables for nuclear power plants are used to supply power to the plant and to transmit communication signals. In case of an emergency, a plant should be controlled remotely by electric signals, not by workers as they can be exposed to radiation. Therefore, if these cables are damaged or short-circuited, they will be extremely hard to repair, so the reliability of these cables has top priority. 

Gun-joo Lee, Senior Vice President of the Macromolecule Technology Group, said, “the Chinese market requires DBE (Design Base Event) tests with its own standards, which include far higher restrictions than other countries. LS Cable received this certification for the first time among foreign companies. This is meaningful because we can finally enter the Chinese market which accounts for more than 30% of the global market.” 
 
The nuclear power plant cable market is expected to expand tremendously as there are currently plans among nations around the world including China, the United States, Russia and India to build more than 300 nuclear power plants in total. Especially, the Chinese government has already announced that it is planning to establish more than 100 new nuclear power plants by 2025 to deal with its skyrocketing demand for electricity.   

LS Cable is planning to participate in ‘China Power 2009, China Nuclear New Build 2009’ happening in Tianjin, China from Nov. 3rd to the 5th along with the Chinese subsidiary of SPSX. LS Cable will begin cooperative marketing efforts for its cables including those for nuclear power plant applications. 

Additionally, in line with its assertive expansion efforts and green initiative, LS Cable was the first cable maker in Korea to develop cables for wind power generation last year which proved to be more flexible than those manufactured by its European competitors and supplied them to Enercon India and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction in Korea.
