■ More than 10 times larger radius coverage compared to existing Wi-Fi solutions
■ Mobile access to wireless LAN is available while driving even at 80km/h.
Seoul, Korea, October 8th - LS Cable announced that the company has successfully commercialized a Wi-Fi solution with innovative improvement over existing Wi-Fi technology, and that LS Cable will begin mass-marketing for both domestic and overseas communication service providers.
The proprietary LS Wi-Fi solution uses ‘beam forming’ technology which is commonly used in military radar equipment to extend the reach of wireless signals to expand Wi-Fi coverage to a 1.5- to 2-km radius, about 10 times larger than existing systems. This is the largest coverage among commercialized Wi-Fi technologies available in the world so far.
The LS Wi-Fi solution also supports a maximum speed of 100Mbps and enables mobile wireless LAN service even while driving at 80km/h, a capability which is unavailable with existing Wi-Fi systems.
As the LS Wi-Fi solution meets the IEEE 802.11x standard, it is perfectly compatible with previous Wi-Fi solutions. While providing a performance similar to WiBro, this solution has a much simpler system structure and uses an ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) bandwidth, which does not require any special license to use.
Dong-yeong Kim, Senior Vice President of the Seed Business Group at LS Cable said, "With the new LS Wi-Fi solution, a single AP (Access Point: wireless router) can replace more than 10 previous APs, thus reducing installation and maintenance expenses on a large scale. Also, this system allows communication service providers to support the Internet, telephony and IPTV services wirelessly. It will change the wireless communication system industry completely."
LS Cable is planning to apply this solution as a digital broadcasting convergence solution for Sinatel, a private broadcasting service provider in Iraq with which LS Cable made a contract in July. To prove the viability of the technology to win the contract, LS Cable established a test network in Wonju, Gangwon-do in cooperation with Yeongseo Broadcasting Service and began QPS (Quadruple Play Service) at 100Mbps for both wired and wireless connection.
As part of its effort to develop new growth engines, LS Cable is developing its proprietary LS-HFC solution based on QPS and coaxial networks; a C5 Soft Switch (VoIP control solution), which is a core component for Internet telephony (VoIP); an FTTH (Fiber to the Home) solution based on optical cables; and wired and wireless communication solutions, including power line communication to realize a smart grid.
