■ Customer-oriented R&D products won all the prizes at the LS Cable R&D Award Ceremony
■ LS Cable’s President Jong-ho Sohn, “Will continue with customer satisfaction R&D activities”
LS Cable (Chairman & CEO Christopher Koo) held its annual ‘LS Cable R&D Award Ceremony’ on the 13th at the LS Tower Auditorium in Anyang to evaluate the results of R&D activities carried out during the year. Over 300 persons attended including President Jong-ho Sohn and Vice President Joon-hyung Cho. At the award ceremony, the ‘GAP-type low-sag high-capacity overhead cable’ won the top prize. In addition, an ‘eco-friendly wire for LCD/ LED’ won the second prize, while an ‘optical cable package for FTTx,’ ‘Ex-way bus duct’ and ‘UPC low oxygen copper wire’ won the third prize. Prize money of KRW 30 million, KRW 20 million and KRW 10 million were presented respectively to the first, second and third prizewinners.
The top prize winning ‘GAP-type low-sag high-capacity overhead cable’ uses an aluminum alloy as the conductor resulting in high conductivity. This cable transmits twice the power just by replacing existing wire without additional cable and transmission tower installation. As such, the advantage of this new cable is that it facilitates improved efficiency with cost savings within a short period of time. LS Cable succeeded as the first Korean company to produce such high-capacity overhead cables. In addition to passing an internationally recognized certification test, LS Cable obtained three domestic and international patents with this new development.
Furthermore, with this technology, LS Cable won in a competition against a Japanese cable company and received an order for a 400kV level high capacity transmission cable implementation project worth $34 million (approx. KRW 39 billion) from the Ministry of Electricity and Water of Kuwait.
The second prize winning ‘eco-friendly wire for LCD/LED’ is used for power supply and grounding in LCD and LED panels. This eco-friendly product that is free of antimony possesses superior abrasion resistance and strength to existing products. In fact, with the excellence of its quality acknowledged, this product has captured 39% of the global market share in 2010.
In his congratulatory speech, President Jong-ho Sohn said, “The projects that excelled in this assessment have achieved their excellent results based on the strict market research and customer-oriented studies conducted from the earliest phases of development.” He emphasized, “LS Cable will continue with the customer-oriented R&D activities in the future.”
LS Cable has been organizing this event annually since 2005 in order to promote R&D and to enhance the pride of the R&D personnel by awarding them for developing new technologies and products. Only technologies and products completing development and achieving sales during the previous three years qualify for the assessment. The key selection criteria for winning an award are technological excellence and contribution to sales.
