■ Center tasked exclusively with power systems, including high voltage GIS•HVDC; seeks to develop thoroughly localized products
■ Aims to maximize synergistic effect with production operations, including Dalian, Museok Co., Ltd and LS Hogye Electricity
■ Set to collaborate with R&D operations in Korea; pursues cooperative partnerships with local research institutes, businesses
Following the establishment of its Shanghai research center last year, LS Industrial Systems established a Beijing research center, further boosting its local R&D portfolio in China.
LSIS held an inaugural ceremony for its Beijing research center at the LS Beijing branch on July 8, attended by executives and staff members, including Vice Chairman Koo Ja-kyun.
The Beijing research center will be tasked primarily with conducting R&D on power systems, including High Voltage Gas Insulated Switchgears (GIS) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems.
An LSIS official said, “Demand for GIS facilities is rising in line with power demand in China, which is surging by the year,” adding, “HVDC is also favorable to long-distance transmission, and we have established a high voltage research center that will focus on R&D on GIS and HVDC in order to preemptively cope with surging demand not only in China, a target market, but also in European nations with extensive territories.”
LSIS has thus become the only foreign-invested company in China to operate research centers for both power equipment and power systems.
ABB and Siemens, which are global enterprises, conduct core R&D at their headquarters. CHINT Group is the only Chinese company currently carrying out local development of systems ranging from low voltage to high voltage
Against this backdrop, LSIS has completed its R&D portfolio, which encompasses the Beijing and Shanghai research centers, and its manufacturing portfolio, which includes LS Hogye Electricity and the existing Dalian and Museok Co., Ltd. Thus, the company plans to increase its sales in China from US$91.5 million in 2009 to US$1.172 billion (1.44 trillion won) in 2015.
