Recently the issue of floor noise has emerged as a social issue. The inter-floor sound-proofing material ‘LS Zero Noise System,’ introduced by LS Cable & System (President & CEO Ja-Eun Koo), received grade 1 in both light-weight and heavy-weight impact sound reduction from the Korea Institute of Construction Technology, which is attracting popular attention. For effective sound insulation, the LS zero noise system has 6 layers of different media like high-elasticity composites. The polypropylene board and polyester filler, and the foamed polyethylene layer perform the triple noise and vibration insulation and absorption function, and effectively insulate not only the light-weight impact sound, but also the heavy-weight impact sound (see glossary).

According to the current laws and regulations, the standard for the floor impact sound was 58dB or lower for the light-weight impact sound, and 50dB for the heavy-weight impact sound, but LS Cable & System said its product recorded 34-35dB for the heavy-weight impact sound, and 33-35dB for the light-weight impact sound, reducing 90% more of the floor noise than the standard (as for 10dB reduction). According to the Korea Institute of Construction Technology, more than 60% of standard floor materials in compliance with legal standards did not meet the performance standards in the field in 2008. Considering this fact, the actual noise insulation level of the LS zero noise system is quite excellent. The product was installed in the Hwagok redevelopment district for a test in 2011, and the company said its outstanding sound insulation effect was recognized by the residents. It was also applied to the environment-friendly complex, ‘three zero house’ (energy zero, air pollution zero and noise zero), in GS E&C’s Yongin Technology Research Institute, and performed excellently.

LS Cable & System conducted experiments using over 400 materials for 4 years, and successfully developed the product, and has a total of 9 related patents, including ‘Impact sound insulating member and floating floor construction method using it’ and ‘polymer composites for reducing impact sound and the method of manufacturing them,’ and differentiated technical know-how.  Also, as this product can insulate sound without using the light-weight foamed concrete, it can effectively improve the floor area ratio for construction companies, and as it has outstanding heat insulation, it has outstanding energy efficiency as well. 

“As the quality of life is improving, the desire for a comfortable and pleasant living space is increasing,” said an official from LS Cable & System. “We will continuously introduce products to suit the taste of consumers.” Meanwhile, floor noise resulted in murders and arson during the last lunar New Year holidays, and it was reported that 86% of all apartments in the country built after 2008 have the lowest floor noise grade, which is a social issue now.

Glossary
Light-weight impact sound: A light and hard sound like the sound of a small object falling or the dragging of furniture. It has a small impact and lasts a short time.

Heavy-weight impact sound: The sound generated by low-frequency vibration when people walk or run. It has a big impact and lasts a long time.
