■ $36 million contract won from the Bangladesh Ministry of Education to build ICT training centers
■ ICT educational infrastructure to be installed in 128 upazilas
■ Bodes well for winning follow-on projects potentially worth $80 million (KRW 86.6 billion)
On the 14th, LS Cable & System (Chairman & CEO: Christopher Koo) announced that the company had won a $36 million (KRW 40 billion) contract from the Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics, a department of the Bangladesh Ministry of Education, to build ICT training centers.
The project is to build ICT training centers in 128 upazilas (sub districts of Bangladesh equivalent to the Korean eup) including Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. LS Cable & System will supply various products and services to implement the ICT infrastructure including construction of the training centers, installation of the network system and equipment, and development of the curriculum, content and training.
In addition, to foster instructors who will provide ICT training in Bangladesh, 32 candidates will be selected locally in Bangladesh and sent to Korea for one year (2013) to receive the necessary training. The trainees will then return to Bangladesh as instructors to train a further 470 instructors at the ICT training centers to be built.
This contract is just for the first phase of a larger project having the goal to build ICT training centers in a total of 480 upazilas. If LS Cable & System successfully carries out this first phase the prospects of winning the follow-on contract for the remaining 358 upazilas is quite favorable. That contract is expected to be worth $80 million (KRW 86.6 billion).
Following successful completion of the ‘Bangladeshi Bureau of Educational Information Statistics ICT Center Implementation Project,’ a grant aid project initiated by KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) in 2007, LS Cable & System has been continuing with follow-up management and thus made it one of KOICA’s most successful overseas projects. In addition, LS Cable & System was acknowledged of its technological expertise by recording the highest points at an assessment conducted by the Bangladeshi government.
Together with this contract, LS Cable & System has already been implementing since July a 132kV and a 33kV power cable project paying $19 million (approx. KRW 20.4 billion) that was ordered by the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh. By implementing the projects, LS Cable & System has secured a bridgehead for an entry into the nearby markets of not only Bangladesh, but also neighboring Myanmar and Laos.
“With this contract, we will actively participate in IT infrastructure implementation projects in developing countries and therefore will be reborn as a global leader that provides total solutions also within ICT infrastructures fields,” said LS Cable & System Solution Business Director Sanghun Shin.
