On the 28th, LS Cable & System (Chairman & CEO Christopher Koo) announced its establishment of an R&D center (head: Director Seungik Jeon) in China as the first in Korea’s cable industry. By building the R&D center, LS Cable & System anticipates to:

· develop products customized to the local market, 
· strengthen business competitiveness by developing core technologies, and 
· secure technological competence of its subsidiary in China. 

The main strength of LS Cable & System’s R&D center in Wuhan, Hubei is the dedicated and professional human resources who possess the highest competencies. These people have proven their abilities at leading universities in China, including Xi’an Jiaotong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University of Technology and Harbin University of Science and Technology. In addition, Wuhan is where the National Power Grid High Voltage Research Center of the State Grid Corporation, China’s largest power company, is also located. This will surely prove to be very advantageous in terms of joint research and product certification. Moreover, Wuhan is adjacent to Yichang, the city where LS Hongqi Cable & System (the Chinese subsidiary of LS Cable & System) is located so the geographical closeness will surely produce synergies. LS Cable & System also pointed out that Wuhan is the center of China’s Rising Strategy for Central and Western Regional Development, one of the country’s macroscopic development strategies. 

Through the R&D Center, LS Cable & System is endeavoring to:

·  secure 220kV and 345kV level extra high voltage cable development capacity, 
·  strengthen abilities to develop special cables for industrial use, such as wind power generation and mining, and, 
·  improve the competitiveness of its low and medium voltage cable products.

In addition, through organic links with the head office’s R&D center in Korea, LS Cable & System plans to develop the center into a general research center of the world’s highest standards for the electric power and communications fields by 2015. 

LS Cable & System’s efforts at technological development are already producing visible results. Following a production certification for the AC 1000kV level super extra high-voltage ACSR cable from the China Electricity Council in March this year, LS Cable & System has completed performance verification of the gap conductor of high transmission efficiency created using a super thermal-resistant aluminum alloy as the conductor. In addition, 220kV level extra high-voltage power cable development and verification are scheduled for completion by early December. Accordingly, LS Cable & System forecasts rapid growth in the Chinese market.
