■ Twice the size of the Anyang Center with 500 key personnel
■ Will secure a global R&D network to be No. 1  

Seoul, Korea, April, 22th - LS Cable & System along with its sister company, LS Mtron, held an opening ceremony on the 20th to mark the successful move of their R&D centers from Anyang to Gunpo, Gyeonggi-do Province. Approx. 200 guests including LS Cable & System ? LS Mtron Chairman Christopher Koo, Mayor Yoonjoo Kim of Gunpo City, LS Cable & System President Jongho Son, LS Cable & System CTO Junhyeong Jo, and GS Engineering & Construction CEO Jongin Park attended the ceremony. 

 The transfer was decided in order to strengthen global R&D competitiveness in line with the corporate vision of LS to be the “global No. 1.” The Gunpo R&D Center is a brand new, purpose-built 5-story building (with one underground floor) that spans 12,700m2 making it twice the size of the previous center in Anyang. It is equipped with a variety of R&D facilities, test and analysis equipment, and pre-production lines, many of them state-of-the-art. Around 500 researchers including master’s and doctorate degree holders are already working there. 

LS Cable & System plans to focus on developing next-generation growth engines and high-tech cable products by installing a Base Technology Research Center, Energy System Research Center, Solutions Research Center, Production Technology Center and Application Center within the complex. The company will intensively promote R&D in the areas of eco-friendly energy transmission efficiency such as superconducting, high-voltage and submarine cables, core technologies and products relating to wired and wireless communication solutions, energy and communications convergence infrastructures, products and systems for electric vehicles, and wireless power transmission (a next-generation technology) and nano technologies. 

LS Mtron, together with the Central Research Center to be located inside the Gunpo R&D Center, is supporting pre-production and development of next-generation products of each plant while also implementing long-term R&D strategies by installing tractors, injection molding machines, and circuit materials and electronic parts research centers at each plant. In particular, LS Mtron is focusing its resources on securing global technological competitiveness by selecting key technologies for each business area in order to fulfill its vision of KRW 4 trillion in sales by 2015. While concentrating on R&D for development of new eco-friendly products, such as hybrid tractors and electric injection machines, and for high-tech parts and materials, such as copper foil, ultra capacitor and cooling hose targeting the electric vehicle market, LS Mtron is also striving for advanced research in the areas of high-speed photoelectric connectors and base materials for flexible solar cells in order to secure future growth engines. 

With the transfer of the R&D center, LS Cable & System has completed a global R&D system that connects with the head office R&D center, the Wuhan R&D Center in China and SPSX research centers in North America and Europe. The head office R&D center will function as a “control tower” for the other research centers. 

“It is all the more meaningful to open the Gunpo R&D Center this year, because 2012 also happens to be our 50th anniversary,” said Chairman Christopher Koo. He added in his congratulatory speech, “As a global R&D hub to produce No. 1 products in the future, we look forward to the Gunpo R&D center playing a key role in contributing to the advancement of LS.”
