■ Turnkey contract with Electricity Board of Malaysia to provide KRW40 billion in extra-high voltage submarine cables
■ Continuously winning contracts for extra-large projects in Southeast Asia, which is dominated by an oligopoly of Japanese companies
LS Cable & System is the first Korean company to supply submarine cables to Malaysia.
LS Cable & System(President & CEO Roe-hyun Myung) announced on September 4 that it entered a contract with the Electricity Board of Malaysia to supply KRW40 billion in extra-high voltage submarine cables.
LS C&S will be installing the undersea section connecting the island of Langkawi with Perlis in Northwest Malaysia. When completed next September, the submarine cables will span 28km to a maximum depth of 20m, and the power supply in Langkawi Island will be increased by more than double.
The Malaysian government’s aim of this project is to foster a tourism hub for its nation, so strict standards were set for technology, production, project execution, etc., in the bidding process.
Southeast Asia is actively building new power networks due to economic development, urbanization, and the creation of tourist attractions. There are many thousands of islands spanning the region, so there will be a consistent demand for submarine cables. However, until recently the market for medium voltage (MV) cables that connect the smaller islands has been dominated by an oligopoly of Japanese companies.
Last September, after bidding for this high value-added contract of submarine cables was announced, European and other global cable companies submitted proposals making the competition to win the project excessively fierce. LS C&S said that the successful completion of large-scale submarine power network projects in North America, Europe, the Middle East and other regions was a key factor for winning this project.
Mr. Ro-hyun Myung, CEO of LS Cable & System said, “We have expected that demand for extra-high voltage products would increase in the Southeast Asian region so we strengthened our marketing activities, which turned out to be effective. It is meaningful that we won an extra-large project in Malaysia, as well as in Singapore last year, where the Southeast Asian market is dominated by an oligopoly of Japanese companies.”
Last July, LS C&S became the first Korean company to enter a contract with the Electricity Board of Singapore to supply submarine cables (approximately KRW62 billion in value).
