LS Cable & System(President & CEO Roe-hyun Myung) unveiled its latest products ranging from the world’s thinnest 500kV power transmission cable to submarine and HVDC (high voltage direct current) cables at CIGRE (Conseil International des Grands Reseaux Electriques, International Council on Large Electric Systems) held in Paris, France from the 26th to the 31st.
Founded in 1921, CIGRE is an international organization that leads technology development in the electricity and energy-related fields with approximately 1,100 companies, universities and research institutes from 92 countries as its members. The biennial CIGRE general meeting and exhibition is an important event for the related industries and academic circles where the latest technologies and research outcomes are shared and recognized.
The 500kV underground cable is of the highest voltage among cables commercialized as of present. LS C & S improved the convenience of cable production, transportation and installation by reducing the diameter of this cable by more than 5% compared to existing products. As a general rule, cable thickness becomes larger as transmission capacity increases, so in the cable industry the ability to reduce cable size while increasing transmission capacity is regarded as a yardstick for technological power.
LS C & S’s submarine cable lineup and HVDC cable ,which was the first such cable to be certified in the world, also received rapt attention. LS C & S has secured a range of submarine cable technologies from long-distance transmission cables laid along hundreds of kilometers of the bottom of the sea to products specialized for offshore wind power generation.
HVDC technology enables electricity to be sent from areas where production cost is low to areas where the cost is high. Recently, HVDC has been drawing attention as a key technology for the Northeast Asia Super Grid that will connect power networks of Korea, Japan, Russia and China.
Roe-Hyun Myung, CEO of LS Cable & System who visited the exhibition to attend the Meeting of CEOs said, “At the CIGRE general meeting, LS C & S was recognized by industry experts as a global top-level cablemaker through demonstration of its recently developed technologies of which only three to four other companies around the world possess.”
