■ The students provide education for children, repaired school facilities, and held athletic meetings, cultural exchanges, movie screenings, etc.
Seoul, Korea, August 10th - LS Cable dispatched the 5th Maeum Team of college student volunteers to the Mudhumalai national forest reserve in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India for 12 days of education and good will activities in cooperation with Good Neighbors, a renowned international relief organization. The team consists of 24 volunteers who stay in India from the 4th to the 15th of August.
Mudhumalai is a protected forest reserve that is famous for its scenic mountains covered by primeval forestry that serves as a natural habitat for precious endangered wildlife such as wild elephants and peafowl. Since harvesting forest products is prohibited in this area most of the residents subsist on an income of less than US$1 per day.
For about 200 elementary school students in Bokapuram, the LS Cable Maeum Team provides art and music lessons as well as physical education. The team also repairs school facilities and built fences to prevent wild animals, including elephants, from intruding into the area.
On the 8th day, the volunteer group received positive acclaim among the villagers for screening Indian movies in the school playground as there are no theaters in the area. On the last day the students also hold an athletic meeting in which residents could enjoy a variety of cultural exchange activities such as Taekwonmu (Taekwondo dance), mask dance and Samulnori (folk music accompanied by four percussion instruments).
In its endeavor to expand its social responsibility activities as a global corporation while providing college students with an opportunity to experience first-hand the impoverished environments facing children of underdeveloped countries, LS Cable has been sending groups of college student volunteers twice a year to South Asian countries such as India, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Cambodia since 2007.
Meanwhile, LS Networks, which markets sportswear and supplies, donated all the T-shirts, backpacks and hats, etc. to the volunteer group.
