■ First Korean company to supply winding wires for an overseas EV
■ Developed products customized for GM EVs, and registered as an official vendor
■ High-voltage technology leveraged to develop parts for electric vehicles
Anyang, Feb. 2, 2017 - LS Cable & System announced that it has recently begun to supply the winding wires
(copper wires) used in Chevrolet Bolt EV. It is the first time the company will supply winding wires for an overseas
electric vehicle.
Winding wire is wound around the drive motor, which supplies power to the electric vehicle, in a coil pattern, and converts
electric energy to mechanical energy. If the drive motor is the heart, the winding wire can be said to be its blood vessel.
It is a core part that gets the electric vehicle moving.
As a high voltage of more than 400V flows in electric vehicles, it is important that the winding wire works normally without
disconnection despite the high voltage and heat. As a high level of technology is necessary for developing a product based
on the high-voltage technology, however, only a handful of Japanese companies monopolized the winding wire
sector until LS Cable & System developed it.
In particular, LS Cable & System has ensured that this product can withstand abnormal voltage flowing into the motor
10 times better than general winding wires. Also, as it is made of rectangular wires, not round wires, the part can be
minimized and lighter, and noise can be greatly reduced.
Roe-Hyun Myung, President and CEO of LS Cable & System, said, “LS Cable & System is taking advantage of our
high-voltage technology and expertise to supply key EV parts, such as winding wires and harnesses, to global automakers,
and preparing for the future electric vehicle market.”
LS Cable & System has been developing winding wires customized for GM electric vehicles since 2014, had its products
approved by GM in terms of quality and specifications, and was registered as the first-tier supplier last year. This product
is supplied through LG Electronics that produces the motor.
