■ Participating in 1 Sector of the Singaporean government’s leading independent energy-type island, signs MOU
■ Last business operator for the Semakau Island project following GE·Alstom, Engie·Schneider
■ MG actual site established based on smart energy technology such as EMS·ESS·solar power·wind power
■ Southeast Asia, which has lots of islands, as base to enter the market with island area-customized solution development
LSIS has been selected together with global corporations such as GE, Alstom, and Schneider as a business operator in pushing ahead with the establishment of an eco-friendly independent island, gaining equal footing with global top corporations in the
Asian MG (Microgrid) market.
With LSIS having been selected recently as business operator in the MG establishment project to be implemented on the
southern part of Singapore’s mainland, power infrastructure head of operations (vice president) Won-Il Kim announced last
September 25, that he signed a business cooperation MOU with Kristen Sadler, manager of the government-funded agency
ERI (Energy Research Institute) established at the NTU (Nanyang Technological University).
Singapore has pushed forward the REIDS (Renewable Energy Integration Demonstrator) business to establish Semakau Island
into an independent energy MG island by taking the lead at EDB (Economic Development Board) since last year.
This project will divide Semakau Island into 4 sectors and select individual business operators, establish 4 MG sites using each
participating corporation’s own technology, and then operate by binding into a single power system, proving to be the leading
concept of Smartgrid business.
Out of the 4 sectors, ERI as the supervisor of this business, GE-Alstom consortium, and Engie-Schneider consortium have been
selected for each sector, where LSIS was selected exclusively as the business operator for the last sector.
From the 25th to the 27th, the Singaporean Government and ERI hosted the ACES (Asia Clean Energy Summit) event on Semakau
Island for the purpose of promoting this project, where LSIS was the only corporation from Asia to be invited as MG business
operator to the MOU signing.
Following this, LSIS will manage 1 sector, not just directly operating and managing smart energy technology such as MG EMS
(Energy Management System), ESS (Energy Storage System), and solar·wind power solutions but also establishing a commercial
operation demonstrating site that enables co-management with other corporation MGs.
As for the project period of REIDS, it will take roughly 1 year for establishment and test run and 3 years for local management
and research, for a total of 4 years, with a flexible condition of adjusting the operation and research period depending on the
situation. The Singaporean Government and LSIS will each cover half of the establishment expenses, and EDB will support
65% of the locally dispatched researchers’ labor costs for 4 years.
LSIS will conclude the contract sometime next month and successfully perform the project in order to maximize the Asian MG
market’s huge market potential.
With Singapore -- Asia’s representative major economic power -- establishing an eco-friendly, new and renewable energy site
from a long-term perspective, the Asian region’s developing countries are paying heed to the business’s success or failure;
therefore, the plan is to gain recognition for smart energy technical skills among global electricity corporations to preoccupy
Asia’s MG business hereafter.
LSIS Chairman & CEO, Ja-Kyun Koo has already been invited to the ACEF (Asia Clean Energy Forum) held at the ADB
headquarters as the keynote speaker. He emphasized that, to satisfy the exponentially growing demand considering
Asian countries’ characteristics of having many islands, the answer lies in independent energy-type MG island, where
LSIS has already pushed through with business by developing the relevant business model at home and abroad.
Domestically, last August, the Jindo-gun Seogeochado Island “Eco-friendly DC Island” business was pushed forward.
The Ansan-si Daebudo Island Carbon-Free City establishment project MOU was also signed October 20.
According to LSIS Vice President Won-Il Kim, who attended the MOU signing ceremony, Southeast Asia has 17,000 islands
in Indonesia and around 7,000 in the Philippines, which suggests huge potential in the MG market. “We will establish
sites under equal conditions with major brands that fight over who’s first and second in the global market, and we will
penetrate the international market by developing the Southeast Asia-type MG model that specializes in island areas,” he vowed.
“Semakau Island is the optimal place to demonstrate independent-type MG and ESS since it has the Southeast Asian
climate, and it is not linked to major power systems. The REIDS project is the first case of multiple MGs being link-operated,
and it will upgrade the current MG standards by one notch. Moreover, it will establish a solution that can be applied
immediately on site,” said LSIS Department Head Sang-Ho An, who is in charge of the REIS project.
